Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the youngest of three daughters of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. After her father died as a Carnival barker as an infant, she had to help keep the family going by working as a maid and server. Ruth grew in a poor Boston tenement neighborhood, Massachusetts. She attended school in the area. But she only stayed in school for a couple of years, then leaving to pursue her acting profession. The route she took was not without obstacles. In New York, her first job involved posing stills in crime magazines. the theatre work that she longed to do was abyssal. After a brief period as a hat-wearing club girl, she decided to return home to the United States and quit her position. In Boston, when she worked at late night, she was an actor for New England Repertory Company and during the day she was an usherette. Also, she studied drama. She ultimately graduated from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
